How sign-up keeps students safe

Step 1 · Who's signing up

Everyone starts the same way. Librarians go to the founding-school form instead.

Students, parents and donors each get the right account type.
Nobody sees a "buy" option yet.

Neutral age questionWe ask for a birth month and year, and don't say what age we're checking for.

It sticksIf someone enters a birthday under 13, going back won't let them change it.

No accounts under 13Students under 13 never get accounts. At middle schools the librarian runs everything at the desk, and we don't collect any student information.

Under 18: a code, not a nameStudents 13 to 17 sign in with a Baton Card code and PIN from their librarian. We never collect their name, email or phone number.

"Buy" links for adults onlyAmazon and Bookshop.org links only appear for college students 18 and older, parents and donors, and only when no free copy is available. Students under 18 never see them.
